Who loves me will love my dog

Today...Tonight...I want to talk about Shelby.

Shelby of Flop came to us a few years ago after I saw her sweet face and adorably outsized ears on the Humane Society's website. The first time I saw her I said to myself, "that is the weirdest lookin dog I ever saw". She was described as Basset/German Shepard mix. But, still, I kept comin back to her picture. I kept lookin at her..and lookin at her...and lookin at her, until I called Viking Mike up and said, "I'm sorry but I have to have this dog". We went that night to adopt her. As we filled out the paperwork, Nathan ran in circles around my chair. The director lady of the Humane Society kept saying, "this is a very high energy dog...she's been through 4 homes in 4 months, this is an extremely high energy dog". I just watched my child run in circles and stared at the lady and said, "I can handle it". Not long after we brought her home, she looked like this:

Her and Nathan were BFF's from day one. Their energy levels were similar and they were both very goofy and clumsy. The very *first* time Shelbs played with Nathan she put a toy in her mouth so her teeth couldn't even accidentally hurt Stomp.

People compared her ears to many things. Most memorable? The Flying Nun and Jar Jar Binks. Sure, her ears were weird. She was basically a German Shepard on a Basset's body. But her ears...Oh those glorious flop-a-doodle ears...They didn't know what they were. They half stood up and half flopped way down. Sadly, she's grown into her ears a bit more now.

Her ears aren't the only part of her that's changed, either. She has now grown into a full-on Basset personality-ed little lazy bones. She sleeps all day, as often as she can. She's protective and loving and still every bit as clumsy as she was the day we brought her home, but ohhhhh the laziness. And the downright entitlement complex. She's a touch spoiled. By a "touch spoiled" I mean that her daddy, the so manly-Viking-Mike, hand-feeds her popcorn in our bed. Therefore, if you throw popcorn on the floor to share with her, she won't eat it. And when Daddy's not home, she sleeps on his pillows and spoons Mama for naps. Every night she gets to sleep at the bottom of the bed where my feet don't quite reach the end.

So now we search for another dog who can keep Shelb-ra-doodle company and enrich our lives even further. But really, what are the chances we're goin to find a dog as cute as this?
